Graylan Spring is known to many as a gregarious, athletic, selfless, jovial friend to all and a fierce competitor when he put on the football pads! He loved the Lord, his family, friends and teammates. Graylan was living his life-long dream studying business and playing Division 1 football for the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin State University when a tragic accident happened on January 21, 2023.
Graylan was a passenger in a car traveling to Houston on a Friday afternoon when a tractor trailer pulled out in front of them blocking their lane. First responders were able to rescue Graylan from the car but he suffered major head trauma. He was life flighted to the nearest hospital where family and friends gathered as the medical staff worked tirelessly to save his life. Ultimately, the brain trauma proved to be too extensive to support life but Graylan's beautiful body was untouched and he was able to qualify as an Organ Donor. His self directed donation went on to save many lives. Graylan's death left a lasting impact on many in the Central Texas area as well as at Stephen F. Austin State University.
The Graylan Spring Foundation was created to help empower student-athletes through scholarship opportunities and to provide vital financial support to various educational, athletic, and youth organizations. By investing in students academic and athletic pursuits, we aim to foster excellence, cultivate leadership, and unlock the full potential of promising young individuals, ensuring a brighter future for all. We are also partnering with the Donate Life Organizations, Life Gift and TOSA to bring organ donation education to youth groups and bridge communication between organ donor families and organ recipients.

River Ridge Elementary would like to honor Graylan by giving out our very first #LiveLikeGray award to one 5th grade boy and girl who emulate many of the same character traits that Graylan did. The selection committee considered many qualities when choosing the recipients of this award. In addition to athletic ability, students should exhibit qualities such as humility, kindness, and sportsmanship. They are friendly to all. They are well liked by their peers. They tend to avoid drama and they exhibit all of our Rattler Pride characteristics day in and day out - they are positive, respectful, inquisitive, dependable, and engaged.

Graylan's Celebration of Life Ceremony took place at Austin Ridge Bible Church on February 5th with attendance just under 2000. His Vandegrift High School classmates wore purple ties in his honor. Viper football players wore their Black Viper jerseys and the SFA football team, who bussed in from Nacogdoches, wore black football jerseys as well.
Graylan decided to become an organ and tissue donor when he was renewing his driver's license near his 18th birthday. He asked a few questions about it but we did not know he actually signed up for it until the hospital showed us the heart on his drivers license. He was able to donate his heart ,two kidney's, liver, eyes, and an abundant amount of tissue. What a gift he was able to leave behind...Life in others!
